Задумав написать очередную книгу, Маня Поливанова посещает тихий провинциальный Беловодск. Писательское вдохновение покинуло мастера захватывающих сюжетов, необходимо собрать свежий материал. Обосновавшись на новом месте, она приезжает по предварительной договоренности на встречу со старыми друзьями. Но радостного общения в этот раз не получилось — подходя к загородному дому Максима, женщина слышит несколько выстрелов.
Прибавление скорости шага не помогло, на ее глазах хозяин падает замертво. Автору детективов остается лишь вызвать полицию. Обыск в особняке ничего конкретного не дал, и чтобы не потеть над расследованием очередного сложного уголовного дела, местный сыщик сделал главной подозреваемой… гостью погибшего. Безгранично возмущенная низким профессионализмом правоохранительных органов, литераторша берет инициативу в свои руки — необходимо в кратчайший срок не только защитить свое доброе имя, но и отыскать злодея. Такая активность кому — то не по вкусу, и чересчур любопытная дама рискует отправится следом за плохо завершившим земной путь приятелем.
